1. Always brush your teeth before bed.
You might be tempted to save this important step of your dental hygiene routine for the morning—it’s important that you don’t! Brushing in the evenings allows you to remove the bacteria and food particles that have accumulated in your mouth throughout the day.
2. Don’t over brush.
You might be surprised to learn that there is such a thing as over brushing. Remember that plaque is soft and easy to brush away, so you don’t need to brush with excessive force to successfully clean your teeth. Otherwise, you could end up with damaged gums instead!
3. Floss at least once in the evenings.
You should consider flossing to be equally as important as brushing. Brushing is not as successful at removing plaque and debris from between your teeth and gums. This is why cavities are most commonly found between your teeth! Thankfully, flossing can help to prevent decay as well as gum disease.
4. Don’t forget to clean your tongue!
Your tongue is home to the majority of the bacteria found in your mouth. Therefore, you need to make sure to brush it so as to remove these bacteria, fight bad breath, and more! If you don’t want to use a toothbrush, you can purchase a tongue scraper to do the job.
5. Replace your toothbrush every three months.
After three months of use, your toothbrush is less effective at cleaning your teeth. The bristles begin to fray and bacteria begin to accumulate on the brush head. Therefore, make sure you replace your toothbrush at least once every three months.
6. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on your dental hygiene products.
The American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance indicates products that are safe for use. Make sure you look for this seal on any toothpaste or toothbrush you use!
7. Consider using mouthwash, but not as a replacement for brushing.
Mouthwash is great for killing hidden bacteria that would otherwise lead to cavities or even gum disease. However, mouth rinse is not as effective at clearing away food particles and removing plaque as your toothbrush and dental floss. Therefore, only use mouthwash as a supplement to a solid dental hygiene routine.
8. Drink plenty of water.
Did you know water actually strengthens your teeth? The fluoride in your water helps to fortify your dental enamel against decay. Water also rinses away harmful bacteria that could cause damage to your teeth.
9. Limit sugary foods.
When you eat sugar, the bacteria in plaque feed on it. After metabolizing the sugar, they release harmful acids onto the surface of your teeth—causing decay. Try to limit your sugar intake and, when you do eat sugary foods, be sure to brush immediately after.
10. Schedule a dentist appointment every six months.
The American Dental Association recommends that you have a routine check-up and cleaning with your dentist every six months. This will allow your dentist to check for signs of gum disease, tooth decay, oral cancer, and more. You’ll also receive a professional cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar buildup.
