Nothing makes a better first impression than a bright white smile, but maintaining your pearly whites isn’t always easy. In fact, some find it quite frustrating! So what can you do to keep your teeth looking great? Here are some do’s and don’ts to live by.

DO brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day.

If you’re hoping to keep your teeth sparkling white, one of the most important things you can do is maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing regularly will prevent bacteria buildup that can lead to gingivitis and gum disease, which can cause a yellowing effect along the lines of your gums. It is recommended that you brush at least twice a day, but it is good to make a point to brush your teeth immediately after you eat to remove any food and drink residues that can stain your teeth.

DON’T consume foods and drinks that will stain your teeth.

Unfortunately, some of our favorite foods can be the worst offenders when it comes to staining your teeth! Caffeine lovers may be all too familiar with this, as coffee, tea, and soda are among the first things we’re told to cut from our diet when trying to keep a white smile. You might be surprised to hear that acidic foods (such as citrus fruits), soy sauce, curry, and tomato sauce are also known for creating surface stains on your teeth. You may want to skip the candy, sports drinks, and wine as well, as these can create a yellowing effect over time. That said, we know you’ll want to indulge every now and then! If you do, just be sure to brush your teeth right after to remove the residue that can leave a stain.

DO eat foods that are known stain-fighters!

After that long list of foods to avoid, you’ll be happy to learn that there are many foods you can eat to keep your bright smile. Crunchy, fibrous fruits and veggies—like carrots, apples, and pears, for example—are like nature’s toothbrushes! They boost your saliva production and scrub the surface of your teeth as you chew. (Just remember to brush your teeth afterwards, as the sugar in fruits can still leave a bit of residue.) When you’re done with your healthy snack, wash it all down with a glass of water. Water (particularly fluoridated water) has been proven to boost gum health and prevent tooth decay.

DON’T use tobacco products.

There are two ingredients in tobacco products that are a white smile’s worst enemy: tar and nicotine. While tar maintains a brown/black coloration, nicotine is colorless until mixed with oxygen, which then turns the substance yellow. When tar and nicotine make contact with your teeth, they imbed into the small microscopic openings in your enamel, leaving a brown/yellow stain on the teeth. Cutting down on tobacco usage is a surefire way to get the white smile you’ve always wanted!

DO visit your dentist every six months.

While there are a number of reasons to have a twice-yearly visit with your dentist, this is a must-do for anyone trying to get a brighter, whiter smile. In addition to giving your teeth a simple polish, we are able to check your teeth for a number of issues that could cause discoloration, such as gingivitis. At TruBlu Dentistry, we also offer a variety of cosmetic dentistry services, including a teeth-whitening procedure that lifts the stains from your teeth and leaves them looking whiter than ever!

Above all, good oral health is the most important factor in keeping your smile looking great. To take the first step towards a beautiful smile, call our offices today to schedule your appointment.
